We hired Smart Yards Co-op to update our front yard. The main motivation was that we needed to replace an old wood bridge that crossed a dry creek and was getting rickety. We also wanted to replace the existing plants with more California natives and some edible plants. Have to say it was a highlight of our spring season to work with SYC on the design and then see it all take shape so quickly. Elizabeth and her team shared our values, were easy to work with, and far exceeded our expectations. We kept a Japanese Maple and spruce tree that were already present; we also reused the existing flagstones from the old design, so there was very little waste. When we decided that we would like to add a water feature, Elizabeth and her team found the perfect sized and shaped boulder and drilled a hole through the middle to turn it into a fountain. We requested more plants that could be used for food, so the team added more berries and herbs, along with two fruit trees. Smart Yards Co-op added a rain garden and updated the irrigation system as well. We love the smell of the redwood compost in the mornings and the birds and bees that come to the fountain for water throughout the day. We can hardly wait to see everything in bloom after the next rainy season. Even though the job is completed and paid for, Smart Yards Co-op continues to be available for questions and advice. They are as invested as we are in seeing the garden survive and thrive.

Elizabeth was wonderful to work with, she brought a lot of positive energy to the project. Her team was efficient and friendly. She had some wonderful creative ideas, like including some of our existing landscape decor and plants in her plan. We feel like she really listened to our input and went the extra mile to include some fun ideas for our children. They particularly like the dry riverbed and sitting stone that she incorporated into the design.

Elizabeth and the whole crew transformed my yard from a plain grass lawn to a fantastic habitat with a variety of native plants and flowering shrubs, where I now see hummingbirds and monarchs; it is colorful and beautiful, and they regularly come back as needed for pruning and upkeep. Also everyone involved here is friendly and knowledgeable, it has been a very positive experience.

Smart Yards and Elizabeth have done a great job refreshing the landscaping for our home. They reworked all the irrigation, set up a controller we can monitor online, and refurbished our lighting fixtures to look like new. They are great about reusing what is working and identifying new plants that can work well with the climate and environment. We also have them maintaining the landscaping, and they've done well there, too.

Our native and edibles yard/garden, which was designed by another landscaper 11 years ago, suffered throughout the drought. A few years ago, Smart Yards Co-Op came into existence and they have been rehabilitating it slowly but surely. They have installed more vegetables boxes, removing useless (albeit native) ornamentals and replacing them with edibles. Our plan is to use up most of the yard for food growing. Elizabeth Sarmiento is very knowledgeable about native and drought tolerant plants and advises me on how and where maximize the growing space for highest yield.

Smart Yards Coop told me they could fix my gray water system for $1100. I agreed and they sent a contract which stated they would "fix the system and take advantage of gray water from three sources" It also listed specific tasks. One of the specific tasks listed in the contract ared was installing a value in one of the showers. This was a critical point for us as the shower was backing up and was unusable. They didn't' do it and then tried to claim it wasn't covered even though it was specifically listed in the contract they had drafted. When I refused to make the second payment until this was done, they finally did it. Then - unfortunately, within a week, one shower backed up and we learned that for the other shower, most of the gray water was going to the sewer. Within 2 weeks, the laundry gray water system had stopped working as well meaning that I paid $1100 to literally have NOTHING work. When I asked them to fix, I got a rude and dismissive response that it was somehow my fault and they had warned me ( which they hadn't, nor would anybody spend $1100 to fix something if they had been told the fix might not work and might make things worse). So, now I am out $1100 for a system that works not at all - which is quite a bit worse than before, and no remedy. Further, I might be sympathetic if they were trying to fix it and struggling but they completely blew me off. Don't use these guys!!!!
