On March 26, 1872, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake ripped violently through the Owens Valley. The quake changed the water level in Owens Lake and destroyed many of the buildings in Lone Pine, Independence and beyond. A surviving section of adobe wall still stands as an earthquake survivor, located alongside the La Florista flower and gift shop in Lone Pine. Further north of town, a hastily contrived and dug cemetery contains the remains of at least 16 people who perished in the earthquake.

A beautiful cemetery with over a century of history. Once ran by the Knights of Pythia during the late 1800's! The Sexton has done amazing work caring for these grounds.

It was like going back in history a 100 years in the old part! Well maintained & preserved, too. It's an active cemetery.
